Scar tissue tends to interrupt the normal flow of movement within our body, where fascia binds around the scar tissue which causes "pulls" and tensions which can affect our joints, surrounding muscles, circulation, posture, movement, and nerves. The resulting abnormal stress on a scar’s surrounding structures may include:
  • Nerve impingement
  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Limited range of motion and flexibility
  • Postural misalignment
  • Muscle atrophy
  • Tissue hypoxia
  • An increase in potential for future injury
(Cutler.N 2007) Research tells us that massage, coupled with dry needling, can improve outcomes, by ensuring newly formed tissue is minimally restricted, so that blood vessels can nourish the healing tissue, naturally reducing inflammation and healing times. Old scars can be managed with transverse friction massage, dry needling, myofascial cupping, and thermotherapy, to soften and remodel the tissue, encouraging the body's natural healing process to recommence. Replacement for remedial massage it's not, though combination therapy works surprisingly well.
